Purpose of the Job

The General Worker role involves carrying out important cleaning and refuse collection duties across the City of Johannesburg. These duties help keep communities clean, safe, and healthy.

Successful candidates will be responsible for tasks such as:

  • Street cleaning and sweeping
  • Refuse bag collection and stacking
  • Bin delivery and collection
  • Litter picking
  • Lane flushing
  • Carcass removal
  • General cleaning and maintenance work

Key Responsibilities

General Workers will be expected to:

  • Clean streets, pavements, and public areas
  • Collect refuse bags and place them in designated stacking areas
  • Load and offload refuse bins for delivery
  • Ensure bins are not damaged before delivery
  • Wear protective clothing at all times
  • Follow safety and operational procedures
  • Report safety incidents or injuries
  • Assist with bin replacements and deliveries
  • Work both independently and as part of a team

This is a physically demanding role that requires hard work, discipline, and commitment.


Minimum Requirements

To qualify for this opportunity, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 10 qualification
  • At least 12 months of cleaning or general work experience
  • No criminal record
  • Must be physically and mentally fit
