Salary by PSIRA Grade (2026)
Grade E (Entry-Level)
R5,000–R7,500 per month. The PSiRA sectoral determination sets the minimum at approximately R5,500/month for full-time guards in urban areas.
Grade C–D (Mid-Level)
R7,500–R12,000 per month. Guards with 2–5 years of experience and higher PSIRA grades earn more, especially in corporate, retail, or residential estate settings. Armed response officers fall in this band.
Grade A–B / Supervisor
R12,000–R18,000 per month. Senior security officers, control room operators, and site supervisors earn R12,000–R15,000/month. Security managers at large sites earn R15,000–R20,000+.
Armed vs Unarmed Security
Armed security officers earn 15–25% more than unarmed counterparts at the same grade. A Competency Certificate for Business Purpose firearm handling adds R1,500–R2,500/month.
Factors Affecting Salary
Sector: Mining, banking, and aviation security pay 30–50% above the industry minimum. Night shifts: 10–15% shift allowance. Site risk level: Cash-in-transit and VIP protection pay significant premiums. Location: Gauteng and Western Cape pay more than rural provinces.
Career Progression
Grade E → Grade C → Grade B Supervisor → Security Manager → Operations Manager. A Diploma in Security Management opens doors to management roles paying R20,000–R35,000/month.
