What the role involves
The Gauteng Tourism Authority is looking for a highly competent manager to lead and manage its corporate communications, international relations, stakeholder engagement and industry relations functions.
The successful candidate will be expected to strengthen GTA’s reputation and positioning while ensuring effective communication and strategic engagement with provincial, national and international partners.
The position requires someone who can combine strategic communications expertise with strong relationship-management skills and an understanding of the public-sector environment.
Key Performance Areas
1. Corporate Communications and Reputation Management
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing the GTA’s corporate communications strategy in alignment with the organisation’s overall strategy.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and implementing the corporate communications strategy.
- Overseeing media relations and the preparation of press releases and official statements.
- Ensuring consistent corporate messaging across communication platforms.
- Managing crisis communication and reputational risks.
- Overseeing corporate publications, including annual reports, newsletters and briefs.
- Monitoring and analysing media coverage and brand sentiment.
- Supporting the protection and enhancement of GTA’s corporate reputation.
2. International Relations and Intergovernmental Coordination
The role will also involve strengthening the GTA’s relationships with international and government partners.
Responsibilities include:
- Developing and maintaining the GTA’s international relations framework.
- Coordinating bilateral and multilateral tourism engagements.
- Providing protocol guidance for inbound and outbound missions.
- Supporting the implementation of cooperation agreements.
- Liaising with national, provincial and international bodies.
- Identifying strategic global partnerships that can contribute to tourism growth.
This function requires strong diplomatic, coordination and relationship-building abilities, particularly when dealing with multiple stakeholders and institutions.
3. Stakeholder and Industry Relations Management
The successful candidate will lead the GTA’s stakeholder and industry engagement activities.
Key duties include:
- Developing and implementing a stakeholder engagement strategy.
- Maintaining and updating the stakeholder database and segmentation matrix.
- Facilitating industry forums and stakeholder engagements.
- Conducting stakeholder satisfaction surveys in collaboration with Monitoring and Evaluation.
- Managing intergovernmental relations guidelines.
- Acting as the primary liaison between the GTA and industry bodies.
- Building and maintaining productive relationships with tourism stakeholders.
4. Brand Positioning and Strategic Alignment
The manager will also contribute to the GTA’s broader positioning and strategic alignment.
Responsibilities include:
- Ensuring that GTA’s corporate positioning aligns with provincial priorities.
- Conducting environmental scanning and positioning analysis.
- Analysing the industry impact of GTA programmes.
- Supporting the integration of destination branding with corporate messaging.
- Monitoring visitor information centre service-quality feedback.
- Developing reports on stakeholder perceptions and agency positioning.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the minimum qualification and experience requirements for consideration.
Qualification
Candidates must have a minimum:
Bachelor’s Degree at NQF Level 7 in one of the following fields:
- Communications
- Public Relations
- International Relations
- Marketing
- Public Administration
- Business Administration
- A related field
A postgraduate qualification at NQF Level 8 will be advantageous.
Work Experience
Applicants must have at least five years’ experience in:
- Communications
- International relations
- Stakeholder management
Experience in a public-sector environment is essential, as is knowledge and experience relating to PFMA compliance.
This means the opportunity is particularly suited to experienced professionals who have worked in strategic communications and stakeholder-facing roles and understand the governance requirements associated with public-sector organisations.
