Key Responsibilities
As an electrician at Rhodes University, you will be responsible for:
- Maintenance of Electrical Networks: Ensuring that the electrical systems, including distribution and protection, are properly maintained and compliant with safety standards.
- Installation and Repair of Electrical Systems: This includes both medium-voltage (MV) and low-voltage (LV) systems.
- Handling Major Electrical Appliances: These include general kitchen equipment and laundry systems used in commercial settings, often requiring specialized knowledge for fault diagnosis and repair.
- Coordinating and Supervising Staff: Overseeing other staff working on electrical systems and ensuring they adhere to safety standards and regulations.

Position Requirements
Candidates applying for the electrician vacancies must meet the following requirements:
- Knowledge of lighting protection installation and maintenance.
Qualifications:
- A Qualified Installation Electrician with a minimum of NQF level 4.
- HV Regs Certificate to perform MV switching.
- Valid registration as an electrician as per the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and registration with the Department of Labour.
- A valid driver’s license is required to operate a light delivery vehicle.
Experience:
- Approximately 3 years of post-apprenticeship experience, with the following specific skills:
- MV (11000V) installation, switching, and maintenance (familiarity with SANS10142-2).
- LV (220VAC/380VAC) installation, switching, and maintenance (familiarity with SANS10142-1).
- Knowledge of power reticulation and general lighting systems, including sport lighting.
- Experience with standby generators and inverters.
Staff Coordination/Supervision:
- At least 1 year of staff coordination or supervision experience, or an RU Supervision or Foundation Supervision Certificate.
Desirable Additional Skills:
- Familiarity with operating and maintaining UPS systems, electric boilers, and heat pump hot water systems.
- Experience with manual and addressable fire detection systems.
- Fault diagnosis and repair of commercial kitchen appliances and laundry equipment.
- Renewable energy expertise, especially in solar.
