Education opens doors. For many South Africans, the dream of becoming a qualified teacher feels out of reach because of strict university entry requirements. But there is good news: South Cape TVET College, in partnership with UNISA (University of South Africa), is giving aspiring teachers a second chance through the Higher Certificate in Education (NQF 5) program.
This qualification is designed for students who do not yet meet the requirements for a full degree but show potential and passion for teaching. It provides the foundation needed to eventually move into a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) program.
Applications for 2026 are now open and will close on 30 September 2025. Spaces are limited, so if you are serious about pursuing teaching, this is your chance to take the first step.
What is the Higher Certificate in Education (NQF 5)?
The Higher Certificate in Education is a one-year program worth 120 credits. It focuses on preparing students for further studies in education, specifically in the Foundation Phase (Grades R–3) and Intermediate Phase (Grades 4–6).
This qualification is not just a short course. It is an accredited program that directly connects to UNISA’s Bachelor of Education degrees. That means after completing the Higher Certificate, you can apply to continue your studies towards becoming a fully qualified teacher.
Purpose of the Qualification
The program was created with two important goals:
- Opening doors for more students – Many learners with potential do not qualify for university because they did not meet the exact entry requirements. This program provides them with another pathway.
- Creating future educators – South Africa needs more dedicated teachers, especially in the foundation and intermediate phases. This qualification builds the necessary foundation for students to eventually complete a degree and enter the teaching profession.
It is important to note that this is the only Higher Certificate in Education that leads directly into the UNISA B.Ed. program.

- Strengthens the pipeline of future teachers in South Africa.
- Empowers individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds to qualify for stable employment.
