Registration for May/June Examinations Now Open

Adult learners and past matric candidates now have the opportunity to finish or improve their scores by registering for the Matric 2026 May/June examinations. The registration period, which is important for anyone hoping to rewrite or improve their matric credentials next year, runs from October 1, 2025, to February 6, 2026, according to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE).

This initiative supports learners who wish to enhance their academic standing or fulfil requirements for further education or career opportunities. Candidates can register for either the Senior Certificate (Amended) or the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, which will take place in May and June 2026.

Requirements 2026 May/June Matric Exams

The Department has made the process inclusive by allowing a range of learners to participate. The qualifications available are:

1. Senior Certificate (Amended)

This qualification is tailored for adult learners aged 21 years and older. Applicants must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Possess a General Education and Training Certificate (GETC), or
  • Have a Grade 9 school report (old Standard 7) showing completion of Grade 9 or Standard 7.

It also applies to:

  • Adult learners with incomplete Senior Certificate qualifications.
  • Adult learners with incomplete National Senior Certificate qualifications.
  • Adult candidates who already obtained a matric qualification but wish to improve their previous results or status.

This pathway is designed to give adults who left school early, or those who did not initially complete matric, another opportunity to achieve their educational goals.

2. National Senior Certificate (NSC)

Candidates who have previously written Grade 12 under the NSC, IEB, or SACAI may register for a rewrite during the May/June session. This option is ideal for individuals who:

  • Want to improve their matric results in specific subjects, or
  • Seek better marks for university or college applications.

It is important to note that no new subject changes are allowed during this registration cycle — the rewrite only applies to subjects that were previously written.

How and Where to Apply

The Gauteng Department of Education encourages all applicants to use only one method when registering to avoid duplication. Registration can be completed through the following options:

  1. Online: Visit www.eservices.gov.za to complete the registration form digitally.
  2. Accredited Examination Centres: Visit any accredited centre near you for in-person registration assistance.
  3. District Offices: Applicants may also apply at their nearest GDE district office.

Early registration is strongly recommended to avoid last-minute delays or system congestion closer to the deadline.

Key Dates to Remember

  • Registration opens: 1 October 2025
  • Registration closes: 6 February 2026
  • Examinations take place: May to June 2026

Make sure to keep all registration confirmations, communicate regularly with your district office, and begin preparing well in advance.

Why Register Early?

Applying early for the May/June examinations ensures ample time to prepare, access study materials, and receive communication from the Department. Late applicants often face difficulties securing their preferred examination centres or processing their details before the closing date.

The Department also reminds candidates that the rewrite opportunities are an important step toward personal development and academic success. Whether you’re improving your results for university admission or completing matric after many years, this registration period is your chance to make that happen.
