Key Responsibilities
1. Assessing Learners’ Academic Challenges
The Learner Support / Remedial Teacher will be responsible for assessing learners who are experiencing academic difficulties, identifying the causes of these challenges, and determining appropriate intervention strategies. This process will involve a detailed analysis of each student’s strengths and areas for improvement.
2. Developing Individual Support Plans (ISPs)
Once assessments are completed, the teacher will develop and implement Individual Support Plans (ISPs) for learners, in collaboration with classroom teachers and parents. These plans will outline specific strategies and goals designed to help students overcome their learning challenges.
3. Providing Targeted Support
The successful candidate will provide one-on-one and small group support sessions to learners, helping them develop the skills and strategies needed to succeed academically. This may include tailored lessons, additional practice, and specific teaching techniques designed to address the unique needs of each student.
4. Tracking and Reporting Progress
A critical aspect of the role is monitoring and tracking the academic progress of students receiving support. The teacher will regularly report on learner progress to relevant stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and the school’s management team, ensuring that everyone is informed about the students’ development and achievements.
5. Collaborating with Teachers and Professionals
The Learner Support / Remedial Teacher will work closely with classroom teachers to implement differentiation strategies and inclusive practices within the classroom. The role also involves liaising with external professionals, such as therapists and psychologists, to ensure that the students receive comprehensive support.
6. Maintaining Confidential Records
The teacher will be responsible for maintaining detailed and confidential records of students’ academic progress, interventions, and communications. These records will be kept in accordance with the school’s policies and relevant data protection laws.
7. Participating in Staff Development Initiatives
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the professional development of the school’s staff, engaging in initiatives designed to enhance the overall approach to learner support and inclusive education within the school.
Minimum Requirements
The ideal candidate for this role will meet the following qualifications and experience requirements:
- Educational Qualifications: A Bachelor of Education in Foundation or Intermediate Phase, or a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) in a relevant field.
- Specialist Qualification: A recognised qualification in Remedial Education, Inclusive Education, or Learner Support.
- SACE Accreditation: The successful candidate must be accredited by the South African Council for Educators (SACE).
- Clearance: The candidate must provide evidence of clearance with the Child Protection Act and Sexual Offences Register.
- Experience: A minimum of 4 years’ experience in a similar role, specifically supporting learners with academic challenges.
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of learning barriers and developmental challenges faced by young learners.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and organisational skills.
- Proficiency in using educational technology and assistive tools to support diverse learning needs.
