This is a permanent role designed for an individual who will play a vital role in supporting researchers, staff, and students within the Sport Performance Lab (SPL) at CPUT. The Lab Assistant will work closely with sport science testing equipment, help in research testing, data collection, and assist with various student practicals. This position is a great opportunity for someone with a keen interest in sport management and sports science research.

Roles and Responsibilities

The main responsibility of the Lab Assistant will be to provide essential support to researchers, staff, and students within the Sport Performance Lab (SPL). The role involves administering practical sessions, ensuring equipment is functioning correctly, and assisting in research projects related to sport science and performance.

Key duties will include conducting research testing, assisting students with practical sessions, and performing administrative tasks to support the lab’s daily operations. This is an exciting chance to develop skills in a dynamic environment and contribute to the development of sport science.

Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Educational Requirements:

  • Advanced Diploma in Sport & Leisure Management (or an equivalent qualification, such as a Bachelor’s degree in Sport Management or Sport Science).

Experience:

  • At least 6 months of experience in using sport science testing equipment such as:
    • Metabolic analyzers
    • EMG (Electromyography)
    • EEG (Electroencephalography)
    • Biomechanics cameras
    • Isokinetic devices
  • Proven ability to conduct research testing and training within a sport science context.
  • Experience working with students in practicals, tutorials, lectures, and research supervision.

Desired Skills:

  • Strong organizational, administration, and project management skills.
  • Registration for postgraduate studies in Sport & Leisure Management is an added advantage.
  • Voluntary or internship experience in sport management research projects or industry.

Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

As a Lab Assistant, your role will include the following tasks:

  1. Research Testing and Data Collection:
    • Conduct various research tests and collect data using state-of-the-art sport science equipment.
  2. Equipment Management:
    • Ensure the smooth operation of the Sport Performance Lab (SPL) equipment. This includes performing defect checks and regular maintenance.
  3. Assist in Practical Sessions:
    • Support researchers, staff, students, and Biokineticists in practical sessions, demonstrations, and special research projects.
  4. Health and Safety Compliance:
    • Ensure that all activities within the SPL adhere to health and safety standards for the well-being of researchers, staff, and students.
  5. Administrative Duties:
    • Perform administrative duties related to the lab’s operations, including project management and assisting with student practicals.
  6. Provide Technical Assistance:
    • Provide technical guidance and support to students and staff on the use of SPL equipment and testing protocols.

  • Organizational Skills: Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Communication Skills: Clear and effective verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact with staff, students, and researchers.
  • Technical Expertise: Competency in exercise and physical performance testing, and the technical ability to operate various sport science equipment.
  • Adaptability: Ability to work under pressure and in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of staff and students.
