The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in partnership with the Sasol Foundation, has opened applications for the CSIR-SASOL Foundation Bursary Programme 2027. The bursary funds full-time undergraduate studies in engineering, computer science, data science and related STEM fields, covering everything from tuition and accommodation to a laptop allowance. Both current Matric learners and university students can apply. Applications close on 15 September 2026.
About the Programme
The CSIR is South Africa’s central scientific research and development organisation, responsible for breakthroughs in fields ranging from mining safety to digital technology. The Sasol Foundation is the social investment arm of Sasol, one of the country’s largest industrial companies, with a long track record of funding STEM education. Together they run this bursary to grow the pipeline of scientists and engineers South Africa needs for research, technology development and innovation.
What sets this bursary apart is what happens beyond the funding. Bursars get vacation work at the CSIR of up to six weeks per year, co-supervision on real research projects, wellness and academic support, interview skills training in final year and possible mentorship from senior CSIR professionals. The bursary is merit-based, and applications from female students, Black students and students living with disabilities are especially encouraged.

Why It Matters
STEM graduates remain the most employable young people in South Africa, yet thousands of talented Matric learners with strong Maths and Science marks never reach university because of money.
This bursary removes that barrier completely and then goes further: paid vacation work at the CSIR means you graduate with real research experience, not just a degree. The service contract, one year of work for every year funded, is not a burden but a guaranteed first job at one of Africa’s leading research institutions. For learners writing Matric finals this year, few opportunities combine full funding, mentorship and a career path this clearly.
Frequently Asked Questions
I am in Matric now. Do I qualify?
Yes, if you have at least Level 5 for English, Level 6 for Mathematics and Level 6 for Physical Science, and you plan to study one of the funded degrees full-time at a public university in 2027.
Do I have to work for the CSIR after graduating?
Yes. Bursary recipients take on a service obligation of one year of employment for every year of funding received, working with the CSIR and the Sasol Foundation. In practice this gives you guaranteed work experience straight after graduation.
Does the bursary include a monthly allowance?
Yes. The package covers living allowances alongside tuition, books, accommodation and a once-off laptop allowance. Exact amounts are confirmed during the application process.
What happens if I am not contacted?
Shortlisted candidates are invited to an interview. If you receive no feedback, regard your application as unsuccessful. For queries call 012 841 2616 or email bursaryprogramme@csir.co.za.
