Your documents, and what gets people turned away

This lesson exists because this is the step that beats people. Not the test, not the studying. A missing document or a copy instead of an original, and you are sent home before you sit down. It costs you the booking, the transport and the day.

Take the ORIGINALS. Copies are refused. 1. Your ID: smart card or green book 2. Two colour ID photographs 3. Proof of address, under 3 months old 4. Your booking receipt No bill in your name? An affidavit from the police station usually works.
What to physically carry with you.

Take the originals. A photograph on your phone is not proof, and neither is a photocopy, however clear it is. Keep the photo as a backup for yourself, not as the thing you hand over.

You have a clear photograph of your ID on your phone. Is that enough?

What happens: You will be turned away. Testing centres check original documents. A photo and a photocopy are both refused.

What happens: Correct. Take the original ID, either the smart card or the green book, and keep it somewhere safe on the way.

I do not have a bill in my own name. How do I prove my address?

This is normal if you live with family or rent a room. An affidavit from your local police station, stating where you live, is usually accepted. Ask your testing centre what they want before the day, because centres differ.

Before you move on

  • Check your original ID is not damaged or expired
  • Get two colour ID photographs taken
  • Sort proof of address dated within the last three months
  • Put everything in one envelope the night before
