NDMC Bursary 2027: Disaster Management & Fire Engineering Funding, Closes 6 October

The Department of Cooperative Governance, through the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), has opened its 2027 Bursary Programme for South African students studying Disaster Management, Fire Technology or Fire Engineering. Applications must be submitted online by 6 October 2026 at 23:59. The bursary supports Undergraduate, Postgraduate Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Masters students at recognised public higher education institutions and is one of the few government-funded schemes aimed specifically at building South Africa’s disaster and emergency response capacity.

About the Programme

The NDMC sits under the Department of Cooperative Governance (COGTA) and is the government body responsible for coordinating disaster risk reduction and emergency response across national, provincial and municipal levels. Every fire, flood, drought and pandemic-scale incident that plays out in SA involves NDMC coordination in some form. The bursary was created because South Africa has too few qualified disaster management professionals, fire engineers and technologists to staff municipalities, metros and provincial disaster centres properly, and because these are the exact roles that get called on when climate-linked events hit.
